Therefore, brick veneer walls require weep holes to permit moisture to escape from behind the veneer and to allow gaps between the brick veneer and the exterior sheathing to dry. WebBricks are not very waterproof—water will pass right through them, hence the need for weep holes. Without modern vapor barriers and insulation, this is usually not a problem as the brick can dry out. When insulation and air sealing are added to a brick wall, however, air and moisture can no longer move freely.

If so, apparently it was competently detailed by a builder whose "system" just didn't happen to include weep holes. My brick veneer house was built in '64, also without weep holes, and I've seen no sign of water damage since I bought it in 1988.
